About NAFCOC

The National African Federated Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NAFCOC) was established in Soweto on the 25 April 1964 by black traders from throughout the country. It is the oldest black business chamber in South Africa. The first President was Mr. Richard Maponya of the famous Maponya Mall. NAFCOC’s founding fathers include some of South Africa’s black business luminaries such as Dr Sam Motseunyane , Bigvai Masekela and S.Z Conco. These traders sought to use NAFCOC as a vehicle to fight for their rights against a government that treated blacks as second class citizens at the time.

 NAFCOC’s main objective is to unite, promote and encourage the development of black and small business in South Africa and thereby draw the majority of entreprenuers from the peripheries to the mainstream of economic activities.

Some of NAFCOC’s historic achievements include the following:

• The African Bank, established in 1975 after ten years of struggle the necessary capital and to get through the restrictive legislation.
• The Black Chain, a giant supermarket established in 1980 in Soweto by approximately 1400 NAFCOC members.
• The Soshanguve Shopping Centre, which was established during the 1980s.
• The 3-4-5-6 Programme, which is predecessor of the Broad Based Black Economic Empowerment (BBBEE) Programme.

In Mpumalanga, NAFCOC was established as the Masihambisane Eastern Transvaal Chamber of Commerce (METACOC). With the introduction of democracy in 1994, METACOC was transformed into NAFCOC Mpumalanga after a merger with NACOC, the former KwaNdebele Chamber of Commerce.

NAFCOC Mpumalanga has 12 branches in the three Regions of the Province.
